What to consider when training PT clients outside

Going outside to train is usually a result of finding the gym a little boring. But right now, at least, it’s the only option for a lot of us, especially if training inside the home just isn’t possible.

Besides, with the weather being so fair during the UK lockdown, it’s the perfect time to encourage your personal trainer clients to get outside.

According to the new government guidelines, released on May 11th 2020:

“You can exercise outside as often as you wish and you can also sit and rest outside – exercise or recreation can be alone, with members of your household, or with one other person from outside your household, while keeping two metres apart at all times.”

Which means that many personal trainers will be looking to transition from training their clients at the gym to training outdoors instead.

After all, it’s likely to be some time until we see gyms and leisure centres reopening as they used to be.

So, what do you need to consider when training PT clients outside?

Here are our top 10 tips to help you:

  1. Define and research your catchment area – Choosing your catchment area is critical to ensure that you’re not travelling too far between clients but that you have enough clients to cater to. You’ll also need to research your chosen area to scope out the best training spots.
  2. Check area guidelines – Certain areas have strict rules and regulations when it comes to training clients, especially during the UK lockdown, so you’ll need to check with your local council before booking any sessions with your clients.
  3. Plan ahead – Weather, traffic, and training route. You’ll need to check all of these elements before every training session to ensure that they work for you and your clients.
  4. Choose your equipment – The equipment you choose will ultimately be determined by your mode of transport, so you’ll have to choose the equipment you feel is most effective and flexible, that you can use with the majority of your clients.
  5. Be creative – You might not have the equipment you’re used to training with, but there’s plenty to be found outdoors from benches and trees to purpose-built outdoor gym facilities.
  6. Dress for all weathers – Let’s face it, the UK doesn’t have the most reliable weather, even in the height of summer. So, to ensure that you’re prepared for all weathers, you must have appropriate Personal Trainer Clothes. You’ll also likely need a change of clothing that you can switch between sessions, especially if you have multiple back-to-back sessions throughout the day. And don’t forget, your PT clothing is the perfect opportunity to advertise your fitness business while on the move to help you crush the rule of seven and boost your brand.
  7. Do your admin on the go – When you’re racing from client to client, and putting 110% into each training session, you’ll likely be exhausted when you finally clock off at the end of the day. So, when do you catch up on all of your admin? It might be time to invest in a little technology. Taking a small tablet and a phone with an internet connection will allow you to continue answering enquiries and writing training programmes and food plans in between sessions.
  8. Identify your niche – When you’re not working inside a gym, you don’t have the benefit of a sales team, so it’s important to be clear when outlining what you are offering to your clients. Research your local competition and try to offer something unique!
  9. Stay active on social media – Location, location, location. Use the natural beauty of your chosen training locations to boost your fitness business with videos and photos on social media and keep sharing those training videos!

So, what are you waiting for?

Moving your personal training business outside might not be easy, but it can be worth it.
